The door
The hinges give like they had been waiting. Behind them is not water. Behind them is a corridor of dry stone, and a bell struck a long way off.
The tide
She drives the wedges home and the humming stops. For a week, nothing. Then the tide goes out and does not come back, and the whole bay lies open like a held breath.
The crossing
Every reader reaches this scene, whichever way they came. That is the part most branching stories get wrong — branches are allowed to meet again.
You are standing on a rejoin. Manyfold's editor draws these, and Spark writes the next scene knowing both ways you could have arrived.
The path splits around the hill. On the far side it rejoins — but not for everyone.
The shore
She walks the shore, and the shore walks with her — the same gulls, the same jetty, arriving again every few hundred metres like a held note.

Down, then. The stair spirals past the waterline, past the rock, past anywhere a lighthouse has business being. Far above, a coin of daylight closes to a full stop.
The Way Back
Mara comes home. The lamp is lit, the bay is where she left it, and nobody believes a word of it. It is the ending most readers reach. It is not the only one.
The Long Way
The stair lets her out into a field at golden hour, under a sky with the wrong number of suns. Somewhere behind her, a door closes politely.
The Bell
The bell was never below her. It was her. Two hundred years of keeping, and the light was the thing being kept.
